Game, set, match: why padel tennis is the ideal addition to your coastal break

There’s a fresh reason to get excited - padel tennis has arrived in North Cornwall, bringing a new dimension to days spent on the coast. We headed to The Point to try it for ourselves.

What is padel tennis?

If you’re new to it, padel is a cross between tennis and squash, played in doubles on an enclosed court. With glass walls that keep the ball in play and a smaller court size, it’s fast-paced, highly sociable, and refreshingly easy to pick up whether you’re a seasoned player or stepping onto the court for the very first time.

How to play: the basics

The basics are simple: pairs serve diagonally, as in tennis, and the ball can bounce off the walls after it hits the ground adding an exciting twist to rallies. The scoring is familiar too (15, 30, 40, game), and the rules are easy to learn.

Padel and your perfect holiday itinerary

Now imagine slotting it into your holiday. Start your morning with a friendly padel match, followed by a well-earned coffee overlooking the countryside. From there, pad down to Polzeath for a swim, surf, or a lazy beach afternoon. Or plan a laid-back family tournament one day, then unwind with a sunset drink at Daymer Bay the next.

Where to play

The new courts at The Point are already proving a hit. You can book a court with up to four friends. Rackets and balls available to hire when you get there. It’s a fantastic way to try something new, keep the kids entertained or add a competitive edge to your time away.

Where to stay

When it comes to where to stay, we’ve got you covered. Our carefully curated collection of properties puts you within easy reach of the courts and with options ranging from sleek modern homes with sea views to cosy countryside retreats, you’ll find the perfect base to rest, refuel and do it all again the next day.
