Top 5 activities for teenagers in Cornwall

Latitude50 13 July 2016

Are you planning a Cornish getaway with your family? If you’re on the hunt for things to do in Cornwall for teenagers, you’ll be pleased to hear that we can share insights from our 15-year-old work experience student Jenna, who cast a light on her favourite Kernow pastimes.

From days of sailing and cycling to learning to surf and exploring the Eden Project’s famous biomes, we’ve listed some of Cornwall’s biggest hits among youngsters.

1. Learn to sail at the Camel Sailing Centre

A group of colourful sailing dinghies take to Cornish waters on a cloudy day.

Many of my friends head over to Rock in the summer for sailing lessons at the Camel Sailing and Powerboat Centre. You can choose between a five-day course or two sessions to learn how to operate a boat – all within the beautiful surroundings of the Camel Estuary! Meanwhile, parents can go off and explore the beach or have lunch in one of the nearby restaurants.

Good to know:

  • Address: The Pontoon, Rock, Wadebridge PL27 6LD
  • Open hours: 9am–6.30pm Monday to Thursday; 9am–4pm Friday and Saturday; closed Sunday

2. Hire bikes and cycle the Camel Trail

Two children ride mountain bikes along a trail with their parents cycling behind.

This is a really great day out. We normally cycle the route from Wadebridge to Padstow and hire bikes from Bridge Bike Hire. If there are two of you, try a tandem – it can make your adventure even more fun!

You can stop for a break along the way at the various coves and admire the views. We usually pause half way at the quarry for a picnic lunch. When you reach Padstow, you can enjoy locally made ice creams as you sit around the harbour.

Good to know:

  • Address: The Camel Trail, Eddystone Rd, Wadebridge PL27 7AL
  • Open hours: 9am–5pm Monday to Sunday

3. Learn to surf with Wavehunters

Two people learning to stand on boards with surfers in the ocean behind.

The team at Wavehunters are based on the beach at Polzeath and offer surf and paddleboarding lessons for all abilities. Beyond private and group lessons, you can also hire surf equipment, join day cruises, and even get involved with fitness classes and sauna sessions!

Learn not only to surf but stay safe in the water. It may take you a couple of lessons (and several topples), but the instructors are really encouraging and make it so much fun.

Good to know:

  • Address: Polzeath Beach, Polzeath PL27 6TB
  • Open hours: 9am–5pm Monday to Sunday

4. Hit the FlowRider at Retallack Resort

A young girl successfully surfs on a surf simulator.

If you fancy hitting the Cornish waves but find that the surf is flat, Retallack Resort near Padstow is on hand with their fantastic FlowRider experience! Cornwall’s only surf simulator welcomes all boarders from beginners to pros, with lessons available and the chance to reserve the facility just for your group.

It’s amazing how you can feel like you’re surfing without being in the sea. The resort also has a new aqua park with inflatable slides, climbing walls and a floating trampoline – I can’t wait to try it!

Good to know:

  • Address: Winnard's Perch, St Columb Major, Saint Columb TR9 6DE
  • Open hours: See the facility’s availability when you book

5. Explore the world-famous Eden Project

The famous biomes of the Eden Project surrounded by greenery on a sunny day.

The Eden Project isn't all about plants! There are plenty of other interesting activities to try if you’re feeling a little dare devil.

They have zip-wire courses, a free-fall experience and a giant swing – look down at the amazing view of the biomes whilst flying through the air! Afterwards, you can head to the restaurant to fuel up before exploring the heights of the biomes.

Good to know:

  • Address: Bodelva, Par PL24 2SG
  • Open hours: Check the website for varying hours
