There’s something magical about crossing the estuary by ferry as the sun dips behind the dunes. The lights of Padstow begin to twinkle and the scent of something delicious drifts from the windows above the harbour. This time, we weren’t just heading over for a wander, we were rolling up our sleeves and stepping into the kitchen.

We’re always on the lookout for memorable local experiences to recommend to our guests and every now and then, we like to try them out for ourselves. So when the team at Rick Stein’s Cookery School invited us to join a relaxed, hands-on evening session, we couldn’t resist.
Just upstairs from Stein’s Deli in Padstow, the cookery school overlooks the water with a wall of windows that frame the estuary; an inspiring setting before you’ve even picked up a knife. As we arrived, the chatter of fellow food lovers and the gentle clatter of pans set the tone for a warm and welcoming evening.

Our class focused on just one dish: Rick’s famous Indonesian seafood curry. One dish, but packed with punchy flavour. With the guidance of Head Chef Nick, we learned how to balance the bold elements - fresh lime, turmeric, a hint of lemongrass and the unmistakable depth of shrimp paste. It was about building confidence, picking up clever tips and having fun in the process.
By the end of the evening, we were sitting down as a group to enjoy what we’d made. The curry was rich, fragrant and just a little bit fiery and it tasted all the better for having cooked it ourselves.
