Hidden places – Greenaway Beach

Alice James 14 March 2022

Sandwiched between Daymer Bay and the village of Polzeath, and only accessible via the South West Coast Path, Greenaway Beach is a wonderful discovery where picnics, rock pooling and shell hunting are high on the agenda.

The location

Greenaway Beach is around a mile from both Daymer Bay and Polzeath – roughly a 25-minute coastal stroll. Its sandy shoreline is accessed via a steep set of stone steps leading off the South West Coast Path.

With no nearby parking or amenities, the beach offers a lovely spot perfect for all those seeking peace, solitude and space throughout the year.

The coast path

The coastal path that leads to Greenaway Beach – from either direction – is one of the most scenic stretches in the country. It makes for relatively easy walking thanks to its lack of inclines.

Through spring and summer, the trail comes alive with a blanket of coastal flowers. Watch boats come and go from the mouth of the Camel Estuary, and if you’re lucky, you may even spot seals and dolphins in the water!

Coarse sand and shingle combine at Greenaway Beach to offer the perfect spot for sandcastle building. Its labyrinth of rock pools at low tide makes for fun adventures – hunt for shells and keep your eyes peeled for the old shipwreck at the far side of the beach.

Dog-friendly all year round, this is the perfect spot for your wave-loving hound, and the coast path makes for great walkies.
