Game, set, match: why padel tennis is the perfect addition to your coastal break

Padel has arrived at The Point in Polzeath, adding a new rhythm to long summer days on the coast. Social, faced-paced and easy to pick up, it's quickly become a favourite way to spend time between beach swims and sunset drinks. We stopped by to see what it's all about.

What is padel tennis?

Think of it as tennis meets squash. It's played in doubles on a smaller court, with glass walls that keep the ball in play and the rallies going. It's surprisingly simple to learn and brilliantly fun to master, whether you’re a seasoned player or stepping onto the court for the very first time.

How to play: the basics

The rules are familiar: you serve underarm and score just like tennis (0, 15, 30, 40). Once the ball bounces, it can ricochet of the walls (adding a very lively twist to every point!).

Weaving it into your holiday

Start your morning with a match and a coffee at The Point, then drift down to Polzeath for a dip or lazy beach afternoon. Or plan a light-hearted family tournament before heading to Daymer Bay for a glass of something chilled. However you choose to play it, padel slots easily into a relaxed coastal rhythm.

Where to play

The newly built courts at The Point are open daily and already proving popular. You can book a court with up to four friends, with rackets and balls available to hire when you arrive. Whether you're looking to try something new or add a little friendly competition to your stay, it's well worth a go.

Where to stay

When it comes to where to stay, we’ve got you covered. Our carefully curated collection of properties puts you within easy reach of the courts and with options ranging from sleek modern homes with sea views to cosy countryside retreats, you’ll find the perfect base to rest and do it all again the next day.
