Golf at The Point

We know many of our guests enjoy a round or two of golf while on holiday. Here, our Property Manager Alasdair shares his experience of the golf course at The Point.

If you're a keen golfer of any standard and fancy something a little different, take a trip over to The Point at Polzeath.

The Point golf course is lovingly maintained and cared for, in continually excellent shape, with the best greens around. The warm-up and practice facilities are an open and sheltered driving range, bunkered chipping green and club-side putting green. The club offers up an outstanding 18-hole, par 72 golf course, which plays like a links in the summer and heathland in the winter. It's situated just above Polzeath Beach, with an excellent balance of high risk-reward holes for the more accomplished and open fairways for those who enjoy the walk. A new access road from Rock (on Trewiston Lane) will also help you get to this family gem.

The view from the 1st tee box

Golf-wise, the opening 1st hole, par 5, eases you in at the start with a big open fairway; but watch out for the strategically placed bunkers on your second and third shots (unless you're the big hitter who takes up the challenge of an eagle putt).

When you finish the front nine, take the time to observe the scenery back towards Polzeath for one of the loveliest views of any course around.

The over the 9th green to Polzeath

On the back nine, look out for the Stroke Index 1,14th (par 4). Strategy is needed here as a stream runs with you up the fairway and tightens at 200 yards. A two-tier green awaits, surrounded by red stakes. If you come away with two points here, you'll have earned them.

Cleverly designed in loops, The Point offers you the opportunity to "get in a few more holes" very easily. Both the 9th and 18th lead you back to the clubhouse, where you will find a wonderful atmosphere, great views and a restaurant serving delicious food using local produce. I would certainly recommend the Porthilly Moules Mariniere with Frites, and the fish and chips is superb (voted inside the Top 100 in the UK).

The putting green and the tennis courts

For those who aren't of a golfing disposition, like my wife and daughter, The Point also offers excellent leisure facilities, including a 30-metre swimming pool with a separated swim lane, toddler pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. A well-supervised gymnasium with qualified staff offering a host of classes will help the fitness fanatics. Tennis is also available on two outside courts, along with golf club hire, racket and ball hire.

Ultimately, The Point at Polzeath offers a fantastic family facility come rain or shine.
