Description

This Grade II-listed retreat lies within 40 acres of private grounds on the Dinham estate, bordering the Camel Estuary. The Gate House provides an atmospheric couples' escape for stolen weekends or the perfect setting for a family getaway in the vast Cornish countryside. Retaining many original features, The Gate House now combines all those little luxuries to make for a cosy and relaxing holiday.

It’s rare to find a holiday home with such a fascinating history. The Gate House is part of the Dinham estate; originally built for Devon landowners in the 1630s as a summer retreat and hunting lodge. As its name implies, the building originally acted as a gate house to the main house. Horse and carriages would travel along the two-mile long drive that winds up to the main house and they would take shelter in The Coach House which still stands alongside Dinham House. During the 19th century the estate was referred to as Dinham Lawns because of the pasture that runs down to the Camel Estuary.

After a day of coastal adventures leave coats and boots behind in the hallway and sprawl out into the beautiful living spaces. Large slate flagstones are warm underfoot and a modern kitchen provides everything you need to whip up a delicious holiday supper. Throw some logs on the wood burner that takes centre stage alongside the dining table and share tales of the day gone by as you sip on a local tipple.

Retreat to the cosy lounge where a second log burner ensures toes remain toasty. Enjoy your favourite movie and as eyelids grow heavy, pad up the carpeted stairs to your choice of two blissful bedrooms. Both adorned with ornamental fireplaces and garden views, enjoy a restful night's sleep amongst the crisp white linen. A large family bathroom with a rainfall shower and an indulgently deep bathtub is conveniently located between both bedrooms.

Outside, the gentle trickle of the stream washes away the thoughts of the everyday and the dappled light dances through the leaves. Enjoy picnics and barbecues in the sprawling garden which looks out across farmland dotted with towering oak trees. In spring, the bluebell swathed woodland comes alive with colour and little ones and four-legged friends will love the gentle walk along the long, two-mile private driveway.

Please note: if you are looking to sleep more than four guests, The Coach House is also located on the grounds of the Dinham estate and sleeps up to seven guests.
